The libraries of Knox Community College
mission is to contribute to the teaching and learning process by
providing both faculty and students with access to relevant resources.
The Libraries
Collections
The collections consist of books, Pamphlets, Journals, Newspaper
Clipping, Audio Visual and Electronic Resources Materials in the library.
These
are arranged using the Dewey Decimal Classification System (DDC).
Reference
The reference section houses encyclopedias, dictionaries atlases, maps,
bibliographies, pamphlets and newspaper clippings. Materials in
this section can only be used in the library.
Reserved Book Collection (R.B.C.)
The RBC includes lecturer prescribed and recommended textbooks, articles
and other research materials. Materials in the R.B.C are available only
as room loan or overnight loan.
Periodical Collection
This collection consist of various scholarly journals and popular
magazines such as Times,
Newsweek, P.C. Magazine etc. This collection is in need of updating. The
library now provides access to Both Emerald and EBSCO Online
Periodical Databases. These databases provide full-text access to a wide
range of journals and magazines.
Audio Visual Equipment
These equipment are available to both faculty for teaching and students
for class presentations. Bookings must be made at least one day in
advance. These equipment consist of television, VCR, Multimedia
Projector, Computer (Laptop) Overhead Projector, Slide Projector and
Flip Chart Easel.
Open Stack (open shelf)
This section consists of books on the open shelf that can be accessed
freely or borrowed by registered students for a period not exceeding one
week.
Registration
All registered students and staff are eligible for membership. Students
are required to complete a registration form which is available at the
circulation desk.
Loan Policies
- Students are allowed to borrow a maximum of three books or other
material.
- The regular loan period is one week for books from the open
stacks.
- Books within the RBC section are loaned overnight from 1:30pm
until 10 am the following day, Monday to Thursday and Friday from
12:30pm. until 10am the following Monday or on the day following a
Public holiday. Room loans are for two hours.
- Members of staff are allowed to borrow books for a period of up
to one semester.
- Loan of books and other materials are authorized at the
circulation desk after the appropriate loan form is completed and a
valid ID is presented.
- All overdue material will attract a fine.
- Students who consistently fail to abide by the terms and
conditions of their loans, have overdue books or fines outstanding,
will have their borrowing privileges revoked.
- Books are returned at the circulation desk.
- Student should ensure that his/her loan is cancelled before
leaving the desk.
- A student may renew materials only if their account is clear and
the item has not being reserved by another person.
Overdue Books
- Books on loan must be returned on or renewed before the due date
stamped on the date due label.
- Student with overdue books will be sent a reminder after one
month for books from the open stacks and one week for material from
RBC. Outstanding books from the open stacks will attract fines of
twenty dollars ($20.00) per day and material from R.B.C. five
dollars ($5.00) for every extra hour after the time on the day that
the book is due to returned to a maximum of twenty dollars ($20.00)
per day.
- If a student has any material outstanding for two months or more
their borrowing privileges will be suspended.
Material Reservation
Reservations can be made for books that are on loan within the (RBC) at
the circulation’s desk. Books not reserved are issued to students on a
first come first serve basis
Lost Books
If any material on loan is lost, a report should be made at the
circulation desk. Students will be charged the replacement cost of the
material lost.
Photocopying
Copies can be made at a cost of six ($6.00) dollars per copy. This
service is available between 8:30-12:30 and from 2:30- 7:30 p.m. Photocopies
are done at the library in accordance with Jamaica’s Copyright Laws and
the principle of “fair use”.
Internet Access
Internet service is available to all college student, and staff.
Reservations must be made. A valid ID card must be presented.

During the Regular School Year the hours are as follows:
Monday - Thursday...8:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Friday..............8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Saturday............10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Sunday..............Closed
The Summer Hours are:
Monday - Thursday.....8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Friday................8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Saturday .............Closed
Sunday................Closed
Rules and regulations
- Material in the libraries are only available to
registered students for take-home loans .
- All users must present proper Identification
before any loan is authorized.
- All bags are to be left with the attendant in
the bag area.
- Smoking, eating and drinking are not allowed
anywhere inside the Library. Therefore no food or drink of any kind
should be taken inside
- Users of the library must conduct themselves in
an orderly manner and must be as quiet as possible so that they do
not cause distraction to other users.
- Persons caught leaving the library with
unauthorized materials will be penalized.
- All Cellular Phones are to be placed in silent
mode or switched off so as not to cause a distraction.
